Writer’s Workshop: The Speech
Monday, January 11, 2015
You will write a speech on any topic of your choice to present to the class.
First, identify your purpose. Why are you saying this speech? Is it to entertain, to educate, to persuade, to empower and motivate, to discourage?
Who is your audience? Gear the language (formal/informal) to reflect your purpose and audience.
Remember to incorporate the four basics of public speaking that we learned in class. You can find these in your textbook on Page 92.
Step 1: Create your brainstorm bubble. Place your topic in the middle, and then brainstorm ideas that you could talk about that are part of your overall topic.
Step 2: Create an outline.
Topic: ________________________________________________________

REMEMBER THIS IS NOT AN ESSAY. IT IS A SPEECH. THESIS AND RESTATING THESIS ARE NOT REQUIRED.
Step 3: Write the speech
Step 4: Edit the speech.
Step 5: Publish the speech
Step 6: Practice the speech on others; family members, friends, your stuffed animals, the mirror.
Remember, change the tone of your voice, involve the audience, but don’t go overboard.
Due: Monday, January 25th. Presentations begin that day as well. We will have 5 speakers present each day.
