Introduction:

In the fairytale The Three Little Pigs, written by Walt Disney, many themes are examined, but the most prominent theme is the value of hard work.  The pigs are forced to move out of their homes, away from their mother in order to foster their own independence.  When the three little pigs move away from home they see how laziness, poor choices, and hard work can truly make a difference in their quality of life.  This story is a tale of lessons learned and triumph for the little guy, and we see that all of this is possible through dedication and motivation.

Permission to Post Videos on Youtube

Hello Parents!

I have many videos of the kids in the classroom presenting projects and assignments.  I also have the lip synch battles on tape.

I would love to post these on the blog, but in order to do so I have to put them on youtube.

Can you please let me know in a note in your child's agenda if you approve of this?

Thanks for your help!  I completely understand if you are not comfortable with this.

The Passion of the Christ and This Week

We have been extremely busy in the Gr 7/8 class this past few weeks.  We have been preparing a presentation for the whole school for Holy Week.  We recreated the Passion of the Christ for the students.  It was a lot of work, especially for our Jesus (Levi Vizler) and our Pontious Pilot (Alex Borek).  They had many lines to memorize, and directions to follow.  They did an amazing job, and there was not a dry eye on the teacher's bench!  Bravo Gr 7/8, all of you were fabulous!!

Prior to our "passion Presentation,"  we presented Elaine Damphouse from the Diocese of London's Refugee Office with over twenty boxes of goods to bring to Windsor's newcoming Syrians of all different religions.  We believe it is important to follow in the path of Jesus and help everyone.  The community of CTK showed so much generosity and kindness!  Thanks so much CTK families!  Pictured below is our student council (minus Alyssa Gibson, who was in the Passion Play) with Miss Elaine.

This week is a short one.  We will begin a unit on Probability, continue to work on our essay, continue with fluids in Grade 8 Science, and work on some Art Projects.

The kids wrote their Math Test on Algebra on Friday.  Marks were sent home for the month of March on Friday as well.  Please sign and return!

Thanks for sharing your awesome kids with me!!!

Great job by all!

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a restful March Break!  I'm looking forward to hearing stories of how the kids spent their vacation time, and getting back to all that Grade 7/8 has in store!

We are back for four days only, but those four days are action packed.

Muskoka Packages will go home Tuesday.  Forms need to be signed and returned.

We are presenting a short dramatization of the Passion of the Christ on Holy Thursday at 10 AM.  The whole class is involved in some way.  We will be rehersing tirelessly until then.  All lines are to be memorized for Monday.

Curriculum:

Math:  We are finishing up our unit on Algebra this week.  Our test will be on Thursday.

English:  We are working on a 5 paragraph essay based on the novel we just read.  This week we will be writing the paragraphs one at a time, and troubleshooting as we go.  All students should have their quotes ready for Monday.

Science:  The Grade 7s have finished up their unit on structures, and will be heading to History.  The Grade 8s will begin their unit on fluids.

Religion/Arts:  Our Passion play will encompass these areas.

Gr 8:  History

Essay Outline: Quotes

This is an example of how to organize your points and quotes for your essay. You must include page references as well in your essay. We will examine this more closely once you have your quotes ready.

Essay:  The Three Little Pigs

Introduction:  In the fairy tale The Three Little Pigs, written by Walt Disney, many themes are examined, but the most prominent theme is the value of hard work.  The pigs are forced to move out of their homes, away from their mother in order to foster their own independence.  When they are responsible for fending for themselves, they truly see how important hard work is, and how much it pays off.

Thesis:  When the three little pigs move away from home they see how laziness, poor choices, and hard work can truly make a difference in their quality of life.

Paragraph 1:  Laziness

  • Want to quickly build houses so they can play

“They built their houses very quickly and then sang and danced all day because they were lazy.”

  • Don’t have patience to take their time and do a good job
“We don’t have time to build our house out of bricks, we have playing to do!”

  • Don’t like hard work
“Why would we waste our time building when we could be running and having fun?”

Paragraph 2:  Poor Choices

  • Sticks
“The big bad wolf went to the first house and huffed and puffed and blew the house down in minutes.”
  • Hay
“The big bad wolf now came to this house and huffed and puffed and blew the house down in hardly any time.”
  • Taunting their brother
“Hey big brother, while your’re working so hard, we are having so much fun playing hide and seek!  Have fun laying your bricks!”

Paragraph 3:  Hard Work

  • Took as long time and did a good job
“The third little pig worked hard all day and built his house with bricks.”

  • Worked with more time consuming materials
“Ugh, all of this brick laying and mortar pasting is making me tired, but I know it will pay off in the long run.  I will have a safe and warm house!”

  • Because he worked so hard, his house did not collapse.
“The big bad wolf tried to huff and puff and blow the house down, but he could not. He kept trying for hours but the house was very strong and the little pigs were safe inside.”

Conclusion:

Although there are many themes examined in this short tale, the one that sticks out at me the most is the theme of hard work.

Restate Thesis: After meeting the big bad wolf, the three little pigs realize how laziness, poor choice, and especially hard work contribute to the quality of life a person or pig can live.
