Essay Outline: Quotes

This is an example of how to organize your points and quotes for your essay. You must include page references as well in your essay. We will examine this more closely once you have your quotes ready.

Essay:  The Three Little Pigs

Introduction:  In the fairy tale The Three Little Pigs, written by Walt Disney, many themes are examined, but the most prominent theme is the value of hard work.  The pigs are forced to move out of their homes, away from their mother in order to foster their own independence.  When they are responsible for fending for themselves, they truly see how important hard work is, and how much it pays off.

Thesis:  When the three little pigs move away from home they see how laziness, poor choices, and hard work can truly make a difference in their quality of life.

Paragraph 1:  Laziness

  • Want to quickly build houses so they can play

“They built their houses very quickly and then sang and danced all day because they were lazy.”

  • Don’t have patience to take their time and do a good job
“We don’t have time to build our house out of bricks, we have playing to do!”

  • Don’t like hard work
“Why would we waste our time building when we could be running and having fun?”

Paragraph 2:  Poor Choices

  • Sticks
“The big bad wolf went to the first house and huffed and puffed and blew the house down in minutes.”
  • Hay
“The big bad wolf now came to this house and huffed and puffed and blew the house down in hardly any time.”
  • Taunting their brother
“Hey big brother, while your’re working so hard, we are having so much fun playing hide and seek!  Have fun laying your bricks!”

Paragraph 3:  Hard Work

  • Took as long time and did a good job
“The third little pig worked hard all day and built his house with bricks.”

  • Worked with more time consuming materials
“Ugh, all of this brick laying and mortar pasting is making me tired, but I know it will pay off in the long run.  I will have a safe and warm house!”

  • Because he worked so hard, his house did not collapse.
“The big bad wolf tried to huff and puff and blow the house down, but he could not. He kept trying for hours but the house was very strong and the little pigs were safe inside.”

Conclusion:

Although there are many themes examined in this short tale, the one that sticks out at me the most is the theme of hard work.

Restate Thesis: After meeting the big bad wolf, the three little pigs realize how laziness, poor choice, and especially hard work contribute to the quality of life a person or pig can live.
