This week we celebrated our thanksgiving mass. The kids did a great job preparing, and their singing was beautiful! We had so much fun! This is the first mass in eleven years of teaching that I wasn't nervous, and smiled the whole way through. These kids make it so easy to do anything!
Math: We are currently working through a patterning and algebra unit. The kids seem to be doing great so far. If you find yourself wanting more work to practice at home, here are the concepts we have been working on:
Grade 7: finding the pattern rule, extending a table of values, or graphing, or finding an algebraic expression to get the "nth" term. The kids were so excited to figure out the algebraic expression that represents a pattern, so if they were to work on one a night, they would have it down in no time!
Here is an example:
5, 8, 11, 14
Term # Term Value
1 5
2 8
3 11
4 14
What are you doing each time? Going up by 3.
Attach the 3 to the variable. Eg: 3n
Now, play with it. How many more do you need to add to get from the term number to the term value after you multiply the term by 3? Add 2.
See if 3n+2 works for three of the term values.
If it does, you have found the algebraic expression!
Grade 8: We are doing much of the same as the Grade 7s, but we have more challenging problems and equations. The same rules apply that are stated above. A Grade 8 sample question is:
1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 4/5
Term # Term Value
1 2/3
2 3/4
3 4/5
Nothing stays the same, you will need a variable in the numerator and the denominator.
n+1/n+2 is the algebraic expression. We are adding one to the numerator and two to the denominator.
Science: The Grade 7s are working on seperating mechanical mixtures and solutions this week coming up. Lab Reports are due on Wed. A test will be coming soon on the unit.
Literacy: we have started our unit on short stories. We have discussed elements of a short story, and have read a few short stories and have identified those elements. There will be a quiz on the note given in class on Tuesday. It is fill in the blank. The kids will also be writing their own short stories in class. We will probably begin this at the end of next week.
Religion: We watched a video entitled "20 Things We Should Say More Often." We are going to make our own videos at school with a similar message.
Phys -Ed: We will be working on the Thriller dance in gym for the next two weeks!
Art: We are building haunted houses. The kids will be given a ziplock back with glue gun sticks and some materials. They ,may bring in their own materials to school as well.
Rosary Day: Thursday we will be praying the rosary over the announcements with the whole school. Bring in your rosary that day.
Forms: Gr 7s: Ropes and Pita Lunch.
